Born on 26th February 1943 in East London, South Africa

Son of Frederick and Constance SHOPLAND. He arrived at Liverpool on 25th March 1945 on the RMS 'Andes' from Freetown (Cape Town, South Africa) with his mother (then 26) and 6 years old brother Fred Charles Robert SHOPLAND. Their intended address was 1 Brookland Road,Llandidrod Wells, Radnorshire.
At the time of his death his next of kin was his father who lived in Avenue Road, Lakenheath.


James enlisted in Ipswich on May 15th 1962 having previously worked as a hairdresser's assistant.
He was killed on June 4, 1964 after being hit by a grenade in Radfan, a region in the Yemen.

The medal shown is the General Service Medal with the clasp for Radfan
